Reading Opens Doors

to future opportunities and choices

The Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF) is a national charity of the Australian Book Industry, working with remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Communities across Australia.

Be part of the story

ILF is Community-led, responding to requests from remote Communities for culturally relevant books, including early learning board books, resources, and programs to support Communities to create and publish their stories in languages of their choice.

“Our Communities and families are strong. They are the backbone of our culture and our first educators. Our aim is for remote Communities to drive our process; to anchor the ILF's literacy programs into the family and Community structures. It is a powerful thing that can change the world for us.”
- Ben Bowen, ILF CEO
What we Do

Our Programs

Our work with Community has led us to the creation of our programs.

Book packs for all ages

Provides new, culturally relevant books to remote Communities across Australia.

Books and resources for early learners

Provides book kits and early learning resources to remote Community playgroups.

Books published for and by  Community

Supports Communities to write and illustrate their stories in the language of their choice.

We receive no government funding for our programs

The Indigenous Literacy Foundation relies solely on the generosity of donations and pro-bono support from partners to run our programs.

This independence from Government funds enables us to work sustainably and long term in the Communities we serve.
